Passage 1Unit 5 Going on an exchange trip

文章内容:谈论交流访学

In 2024, a group of students from a school in California, United States, went on an educational and cultural exchange journey in three cities in China: Beijing, Suzhou, and Shanghai.

For Ian Sierra, a boy in the group, this was his first time traveling abroad, and he felt nervous before the trip. “I should behave well, because every move is the image (形象) of the whole group, my school, and my country.”

During the trip, Sierra and his friends were excited that they opened their minds, tried new things, and talked with Chinese people actively. Sierra visited places of interest and tried local food, but the part he liked best about the trip was the exchange and homestay (家庭寄宿) program at Beijing No.4 High School International Campus (BHSFIC), where he spent over two days. “My homestay partner, his parents, and everyone else were very welcoming and kind. I felt like I had become part of an interconnected (有联系的) community,” he said. For Sierra, the weeklong trip even influenced his plan for the future job. “I used to consider becoming a math teacher in the US. Now I’m planning to work in Beijing or Shanghai.” Gong Siyong, a student at BHSFIC and Sierra’s homestay partner, said that an exchange experience was very surprisingly different from simply touring a country. “Through our time together, I’ve come to realize the students from both schools have their different personalities (性格) and qualities (品质). We have more similarities than differences, and those differences can be understood,” said Gong.

During the Warring States Period (475﹣221 BC), King Zhao of the State of Yan wanted to get talented people to work for him. When he asked a scholar (有学问的人) named Guo Wei for advice, Guo told him the story of buying horse bones with 500 pieces of gold.

There was once a king who wanted a special kind of horse. This horse could run 1, 000 li a day. It was called qianlima. He sent many people to find these horses and buy them for him. After three years, nobody found him such a horse.

The king was very angry. “What I want is a live horse, not the bones of a dead horse!”

The man answered calmly, “Imagine this. You are willing to pay a high price for a dead horse, let alone a live one. This shows people you truly wish to buy the horses. Just wait and the horses you want will come very soon.”

Passage 3Unit 7 The secret of memory

文章内容:谈论我们的记忆技巧

Gianni has a very special kind of memory. He explains in his own words: “It’s a kind of memory that is connected to what I see. It means that every idea I learn, everything I read, becomes a part of me. Normally, a person who doesn’t have this gift, and who hasn’t studied memory, tends to just forget things—even an entire book. Not me.” Gianni says that his “gift”, or special ability, he has memorized more than 250 books!

Memorizing over 250 books is surprising, but it’s not the only surprising thing about Gianni. He says that he can remember every detail of every day of his life. He also says that he can remember these details from the time he was less than one day old!

Researchers are now studying how memory and learning change the brain. Some research already shows that a great memory may not depend on the right DNA only. It seems that everyone can remember more if they try. According to Dr. Malgaroli, “If you really need to use your brain to store some kind of information, you have this ability. It’s just a matter of exercise.” So, practice and exercising the brain can improve the memory!

The same idea is true for Gianni. His gift is just only part of his success. Since the age of 11, he’s been training his brain to remember more and more. He practices continuously to improve the power of his memory. Gianni thinks about memory, and works on it, all the time. He has even memorized a whole series of historical books!

Gianni believes his memory is mainly because of his very hard work. He even holds classes to teach others how to improve their memories. In his classes, Gianni shows people how to organize their memories and how to “remember to remember”. “I think the only problem with memory is the correct order. There’s a lot of brain space, so I think there are no limits.”

A. He enjoys reading.                             B. He is a clever student.

C. He can remember well.                       D. He connects what he sees.

B. Not everyone can have a good memory.

C. Practice can help build up your memory.

D. Brain is mainly used to store information.

3. Why did Gianni memorize books?

A. To study brain science.                       B. To develop his memory.

C. To improve his knowledge.                 D. To prepare for historical tests.

4. Which is the best title of the passage?

A. The Memory Man                                 B. An Unforgettable Memory

C. Mental Athletes                                    D. Special Power to remember

Passage 4Unit 8  Pets and us

文章内容:宠物

In the village of Kentucky, there lived a young girl named Amanda. She moved here for only 2 weeks. Her closest friends were far from her. Amanda kept herself busy for hours by walking around the grassy fields nearby, enjoying the natural beauty along them. On the weekend, Amanda would even volunteer on farms to help take care of sheep, cows and horses.

Still, it was easy for Amanda to feel lonely in her big house. One day, just as Amanda was about to leave and spend time walking around, she saw a cat jump onto the porch (门廊). Even though the cat looked dirty, it was beautiful with bright blue eyes.

Amanda’s feeling of surprise quickly gave way to a feeling of pity. Thinking of what she could offer the cat, Amanda hurried to the kitchen and prepared two bowls: one filled with fish and the other with water. After sniffing (嗅) them carefully, the cat began to eat the food hungrily. Once it finished its meal, the cat ran away into the thick grass and disappeared.

From that day, the cat would appear on the porch every day in the morning and beg for food and water, and Amanda would always be there ready. Their relationship started to deepen as Amanda enjoyed regularly seeing her new “furry (毛茸茸的) neighbours”. The cat was too nervous to be taken indoors, but it was comfortable with Amanda gradually.

However, one day, everything took a different turn in the morning. Amanda brought a bowl of fish near the porch and waited for the cat as usual, but it didn’t appear. The next day, and the day after that, the cat didn’t show up either. She stepped into the thick grass where the cat usually went and searched carefully.

At that time, she heard the sounds of kittens (小猫) meowing. She was surprised to find her “furry neighbours” lying on the grass with four kittens. The kittens were very cute. Amanda quickly rushed back home to prepare some food and water for them.
