You are on a camping trip with your family in the wild (野外). It’s starting to get dark. Your parents ask you to find some dry         . They need to start a campfire. You get into the forest and find an open space. Sticks are all over the ground. You gather a lot and start to go back. But which way? “The path must be here         ,” you say to yourself. “Why can’t I find it?”

You’re worried and afraid. A shiver (战栗) runs          your body. What would happen if you got lost? Would you have the skills to         ? How can you prepare yourself?

Shelter (庇护所) & Food

Always remember to carry          with you. Put into your pocket. These dried fruit and energy bars can keep you living         . Then try to take a plastic sheet (塑料床单) with you if you can. You’ll soon find out         . In summer, the plastic sheet can keep you from the rain. And in winter, it can protect you from cold and wind.

Wild Animals

Most wild animals are not dangerous. Large animals, such as wolves, seldom come near people. But be sure to          food up in a tree, away from your shelter, so these large animals can’t reach it. Smaller animals are a bigger worry. You may get hurt by a snake. You should be very          if snakes come close to your shelter. Always check your clothes before you go to sleep and get up.

Remember, people will be          for you! If you are lost in a forest, just make sure you follow the tips, and everything will be OK!

Pet Racing

There are three main types of pet racing. They help you find out how fast your pets can get from one place to another. The three types of pet racing are:

1. Racing one pet against (对抗) pet of the same type. For example: seeing which of your two guinea pigs can get to the end of the dining room table first. Baidu “guinea pig race” and you’ll see some amazing guinea pigs racing against each other!

2. Racing pets against other pets of different types. For example, which is faster—cats or dogs?

3. Racing pets against yourself. For example, can you get home before your cat does?

Of course racing a goldfish against a horse isn’t very fair (公平). If you want to know which pets you could race against each other, here is a picture to show you the top speeds (最高速度) of different pets.

Even though (尽管) cats are only the third-fastest pet in this picture, they often become very active (活跃的) in the evening when they run and jump around the house. During this time they are really the fastest animals in the world and can travel fast enough to leave the earth! Look up “The 41 Most Interesting Cat Jumps of All Time” on the Internet.

11.Which of the following is the first type of pet racing?

A.Amy holds a racing between her two pet tortoises.

B.Tommy runs with his pet dog in the park after school.

C.Jack wants to see if his mouse runs faster than his rabbit.

D.Simon’s parrot moves more quickly than Sandy’s pet pig.

12.Which animal can run 88 km/h from the picture?

A.A cat.                  B.A bear.                C.A horse.               D.A dog.

13.What can we know about cats from the passage?

A.They are children’s best friends.                B.They enjoy living in a human’s house.

C.They run the fastest in the world.              D.They are more active in the evening.

What part of nature do you like best? Is it the sea, the mountains, or your own backyard? You can learn how to draw landscapes as you enjoy the beauty of the outdoors. When you draw a scene, you can remember that moment forever.

Art stores are filled with wonderful tools for artists. There are special pencils, pens, colored pens, and several types of artists’ paints. Sometimes it is better for beginners to start just with a pencil. You can make a lot of mistakes (失误). You can erase pencil and start again.

Drawing landscapes gets easier with practice. This book will give you some tips on how to get started. When you start out to draw a landscape, you may feel that it’s quite difficult. It may seem that the mountains, rivers, and trees you draw all look the same. In fact, the artist can use skills to design a picture. Think about taking photos with a camera. By moving the camera a little, you can change what goes into your picture. Drawing a landscape is similar to this.

One thing you have to think about before start is where to put the horizon (地平线). The horizon is the line where the earth meets the sky. If the horizon is at a very low part of the picture, the picture will seem very near. If it is close to the top, the picture will seem far away.

Part 1 Getting Started

Try to draw your picture in geometric (几何) shapes first. The mountains are shaped like cones. Sketch (速写) the cones with your pencil. Make your lines very light. In front of the mountains are some foothills. The tops of the foothills are round. Next, sketch your tree. It will be a cylinder. Lightly draw a circle (圆) around the area where the leaves will be.

14.Who may be the readers of the book?

A.Camping lovers.                                      B.World-famous artists.

C.Beginners in painting.                              D.Students learning Maths.

15.What may the picture be like when the horizon is at the low part?

A.It gives you more space to make mistakes. B.It makes you feel very close to the picture.

C.It changes the size of the paper you draw on.     D.It allows you to put more details in the picture.

16.Which geometric shape can we use to sketch the mountains?

参考答案

1.B    2.A    3.C    4.D    5.A

根据“They need to start a campfire.”可知,他们需要生营火,所以父母让你找干燥的木头,故选B。

2.句意:你自言自语道“小路一定在某个地方”。
