二、完形填空 (本大题共10小题,每小题1分,共10分)

When I was a young boy, we lived just down the road from a public swimming pool. During the          months, I would be there almost every day swimming and playing for hours. The best thing of all was they had a concession stand (小卖部) there. You could buy a cup of coke for 15 cents and a bag of chips was only a dime (10 cents). Often Mom or Nana would give me a quarter (25 cents) before I         , so I could have a snack there. Sometimes, though, they weren’t home or were busy working. That is when I would try the sofa cushions (垫子),          to find some change that had fallen out of someone’s pockets. Often to my         , I would find a dime or a dime and a nickel (5cents) and sometimes even a quarter. Then I would run off to the swimming pool with          in my hand and happiness in my heart.

I didn’t realize until recently that I found change there only in summer. I          looking between the cushions in winter a few times and not even finding a penny. I think that Mom, Nana, Dad, or all three of them would drop change down there for me to find, although I never          it. They did so knowing it would make my          and bring a smile to my face. Of course, they never said a word about it even after I had grown up. I guess some secrets are too          to share.

I think that maybe an unseen act of kindness has a special joy to it. You get no thanks for it, at least not to your face. But, no act of kindness is ever          unseen. In fact, it fills your heart with happiness. You know that you are helping another. You know that you are making someone’s life better.

15.A.spring             B.summer                  C.autumn                   D.winter

16.A.promised         B.chose                     C.paid                       D.left

17.A.hoping            B.waiting                  C.preparing                D.deciding

18.A.knowledge       B.business                 C.pleasure                  D.taste

19.A.candy              B.change                   C.clothes                   D.wallet

20.A.practise           B.avoid                     C.suggest                   D.remember

21.A.saw                 B.believed                 C.made                      D.explained

22.A.dream             B.plan                       C.day                        D.heart

Subject: Re: How’s it going?
Hi Simon,

Sorry, I haven’t written till now. Since I got here I’ve been really busy with the course and making new friends. I’m speaking English all the time and going out in the evenings with my classmates. We’re a real mix of nationalities: Chinese, Russian, Thai, Italian, Spanish...

We all talk in English but I’m learning lots about other languages and countries too. We live pretty near the school and it’s only a short bus ride from Edinburgh city centre. There’s an ancient castle too and we’re going there on a school trip next week. Edinburgh is a really interesting place to be and there’s a festival on at the moment. We’ve been hanging out in the streets watching the street performances from actors and musicians. Yesterday I saw a magician doing card tricks—it was so much fun!

I’ll send some photos of Edinburgh Castle next time. Take care and let me know how you are doing.

Fran

We’ve all heard about the man who discovered gravity (重力) and the apple that fell from a tree and hit him on the head. However, the 17th-century “aha moment” is actually a bit of a lie! Newton did witness an apple falling from a tree one day and this got him thinking about what actually caused the apple to fall to the ground.

Newton later developed his theory of Gravity, believing that Earth has a force (力) that pulls objects down, which prevents objects from aimlessly floating around.

While we know that Isaac Newton discovered Gravity, he also made many other scientific discoveries. Newton is also credited with discovering the three laws of motion. These three laws, or principles, explain how things move.

Law 1: An object at rest stays at rest. A moving object keeps moving. Objects continue doing what they’re doing unless a stronger force acts on them.

Here, the stronger force is the wall It stops the truck but not the boxes, so they keep moving backward

Law 2: It takes more force to move a heavy object than to move a lighter object. Newton came up with a scientific formula to explain this:

Force = Mass x Acceleration.

Large weights with a lot of mass require more force to lift than smaller, lighter weights do

Law 3: For every force, there is an equal reaction in the opposite direction.

Air from an untied balloon rushes out in one direction As the air escapes, it pushes the balloon in the opposite direction

28.Which part of a magazine is the reading material most probably taken from?

A.History.               B.Sports.                C.Culture.               D.Science.

29.The drawing for Law 1 shows that ________.

A.the boxes get a stronger force than the truck

B.the truck stays at rest, but the boxes do not

C.the wall acts on the truck but not on the boxes

D.the truck keeps moving, but the wall stays at rest

30.Which picture best shows Law 3?

A.         B.     C.               D.

Many people around the world have read about Dion Leonard and his dog, Gobi. It is a moving story about man’s best friend—his dog! It all began when Dion, an ultra-marathon runner, was running in one of the world’s most difficult challenges, the Gobi March—a series of seven marathons across the desert (沙漠).

The run

The Gobi March is a 250-kilometre race across deserts around the world. Dion, a 42-year-old runner, had already run over a hundred kilometres across the Gobi Desert when a homeless dog decided to join him and ran with him for the rest of the day.

When Dion woke up the next day, he found the dog outside his tent. She had slept there all night waiting for him. Dion tried his hardest to tell the dog to go away because he was worried that the small dog would get under the feet of all the runners. However, the dog refused to go and crossed the finish line for that day’s race with Dion. “I started to speed off and I’m thinking, this dog won’t last the whole day, but she was still with me at the end,” said Dion. The loveable little dog slept with him in the tent that night. She had been very lonely before she met Dion. Dion called his new friend Gobi and the pair stayed together until the end of the race.

________

When the race was over, Dion left Gobi with a friend in China while he went home for the necessary travel documents to bring her to the UK. Dion had been back in Scotland for a month when he heard that Gobi had gone missing, so he flew back to China to search for her at once. After searching for Gobi for five days, Dion had nearly given up all hope. He was very upset. Although everyone was looking hard, no one could find Gobi.

Luckily, a local person noticed Gobi while he was out walking. He had seen the posters and TV footage (镜头) about Gobi and contacted Dion straight away. Gobi and Dion were both pleased to be reunited.

And now?

Dion brought Gobi back home to Scotland. They now run together every day, and Gobi is helping Dion to train for his marathons. Before Dion met Gobi, training had always been rather lonely.

Dion has also written a book about their story, called Finding Gobi, and 20th Century Fox is thinking of making it into a movie.

31.What can we know from the passage?

A.Dion lost Gobi on his way home.              B.Gobi once ran a 250-kilometre race.

C.Dion met Gobi just by accident.                D.Gobi became famous after the film.

参考答案

1.D

【详解】句意:——你打算怎么去哈尔滨?——我还不确定。也许乘飞机。

考查特殊疑问句。What什么;When什么时候;Where哪里;How如何。根据“Maybe by plane.”可以,此处是对方式提问,how符合语境。故选D。

2.B

【详解】句意:这伟大的经典音乐的影响已经超越了时间的界限。

考查介词辨析。through表示“通过”;beyond表示“超出”;against表示“反对”;without表示“没有”。根据“The influence of this great classical music has gone…the boundaries of time.”可知是指“超越时间的界限”,故选B。
