Should robots work in restaurants in the future?
There will be more robots in the future. Some robots can even serve in restaurants like human waiters. Now, more and more restaurants are using robots instead of people to serve customers.
Restaurants in the US have a hard time finding enough cooks and servers. So they begin to use smart robots to take the place of people. In the kitchen, robots can make burgers and salad. Some robots work in the front of the restaurant. Some robot-servers say hello to customers and guide them to their tables, while people take orders. Other robots can take orders by themselves. People often put plates on and take plates off a robot that moves between the kitchen and the dining area. Some people think robots are the future of eating out. But others say taking jobs away from people is a bad idea. Should robots work in restaurants in the future? What do you think?
| YES Three reasons robots should work in restaurants |
| ①They solve the problem of not having enough workers. They help restaurants work better and maybe even save money.
②Robots are more dependable (可靠的) than people. They let human workers spend more time with customers. ③A restaurant with robots will draw more customers because robots are interesting and fun. |
| NO Three reasons robots should not work in restaurants |
| ①When people go out to eat, they want friendly service from a person, not from a machine made of metal and plastic (金属和塑料).
②Robots not only are expensive and can’t do many things, but it’s not fair to make people lose their jobs in the future. ③Technology can break down easily. If a robot stops working in a busy restaurant, it can cause danger or a big mess. |
16.Why do some American restaurants use robots instead of humans?
A.Because robots are very cheap to buy.
B.Because robots can make more delicious food.
C.Because they can’t find enough human workers.
D.Because customers like robots better than humans.
17.What does the underlined word “draw” mean?
A.Attract. B.Paint. C.Pull. D.Take.
18.Where can we probably read this passage?
A.In a storybook. B.In a science newspaper.
C.In a history book. D.In a fashion magazine.

Tomorrow’s Touch: A Tech Revolution
Imagine a world where technology blends seamlessly with humanity. By 2040, I believe we shall wear eco-skin—thin, flexible screens that monitor health while displaying digital art. What creative possibilities this will unlock! Artists will design living tattoos that change with moods, and doctors shall detect illnesses through microscopic sweat analysis.
The development of such tech faces huge challenges. Scientists will need to solve power issues: “Solar threads are going to weave into fabrics,” Dr. Lena Chen predicts at Future Tech Summit. Ethical debates will arise too. How transparent shall our health data be? But these challenges spark innovation. Young inventors will create solutions we can’t yet imagine.
Personally, I shall study bio-engineering to join this revolution. My school’s “Invent Tomorrow” club will host coding camps next semester. There, we shall develop prototype gloves translating sign language into speech—making communication barrier-free. What greater purpose could technology serve?
This future isn’t about cold machines. It’s about creative connections. When eco-skin reminds grandparents to take medicine, or when a child’s drawn butterfly flutters on their sleeve, technology shall prove its true role: helping humans flourish.
19.What is the key feature of “eco-skin” technology?
A.Replacing doctors with AI. B.Combining health monitoring with digital art.
C.Creating permanent tattoos. D.Generating solar energy alone.
20.What major challenge does Dr. Chen mention?
A.Ethical debates about data privacy. B.Lack of creative designers.
C.High costs of materials. D.Public resistance to new tech.
21.How does the writer plan to develop relevant skills?
A.By attending medical school immediately.
B.Through coding camps in the “Invent Tomorrow” club.
C.By joining Future Tech Summit.
D.Through bio-engineering internships now.
22.What example shows technology helping human connections?
A.Flexible screens displaying digital art. B.Gloves translating sign language into speech.
C.Children drawing butterflies on devices. D.Scientists debating ethics

①What will our life be like in 50 years? Although we don’t know the answer, we believe that it will be very different from the life today. In the future, I think we will live on Mars. Here is what life will be like there.
②First of all, transport should be much better. Now, our spaceships (宇宙飞船) are too slow to carry lots of people to space—it takes months. However, in the future, it will take us two or three days to get to Mars by spaceship!
③Life on Mars may allow people to have more free time. Many people believe that robots will do most of our work, so we will have more time for our hobbies.
④How about the food, water, and air people need to live? Scientists will be able to develop plants that can be grown on Mars. These plants will produce the food and air we need. However, can these plants give water to us? There is no answer now.
⑤There are also some problems for us. Mars pulls us much less than the earth does. This will be dangerous because we can easily jump too high and fly slowly away into space. To stop this, humans on Mars have to wear special shoes to put on weight. What’s more, food will look like pills (药片) and will not be as delicious as it is today. Also, space travel may make many people feel ill.
23.What will the future spaceship be like?
A.It will be much slower. B.It will become much faster.
C.It will be more expensive. D.It can carry people to any place.
24.What does the underlined word “this” refer to?
A.Flying away into space. B.Becoming much heavier.
C.Looking more beautiful. D.Eating too many pills.
25. Which of the following shows the structure of this passage?
26.Who may be interested in this passage?
A.Miss Xie, a traveller, who tries to fly around the world.
B.Ms Liang, a reporter, who loves reading history books.
C.Mr Smith, a chef, who studies plants.
D.Ann, a student, who wants to learn about the future life in space.

Computers have become smarter in recent years. The AI-powered chatbot (人工智能聊天机器人) ChatGPT is able to answer questions, write articles and do translations like a human. It has caused excitement all over the world. Like most products these days, ChatGPT wasn’t made by just one person. Instead, it was developed by a group of engineers at OpenAI. But according to the company, one man played an especially important role. That man is Jakub Pachocki.
Pachocki is a programmer (程序员). He has been interested in AI for many years. He wants to use this technology to make computers smarter. In 2017, the man joined OpenAI. There he taught a robot to play Dota 2, an online game. Pachocki made the robot play against itself over and over until it reached the professional level.
Pachocki began working on ChatGPT in 2018. His job was to pretrain (预训练) the AI system. The man and his team made computers study billions of words. These words came from books, magazines, websites and so on. They covered many different topics. By studying these words, the system learnt the patterns (模式) of human language. This process (过程) helped it develop the ability to “chat” about different topics like a real person.
Although Pachocki is very talented, he has kept a low profile (保持低调). He seldom talks to the media. He is not active on social media either. The programmer, instead, focuses on his work. He spends most of his time trying to make computers smarter.
Does ChatGPT’s intelligence (智力) surprise you? Well, now you know there are smart minds like Pachocki behind it. Computers are not getting smarter on their own.
27.Why has ChatGPT made people all over the world excited?
A.Because it can play online games.
B.Because it can work better than human beings.
C.Because it was developed by a group of engineers.
D.Because it can do many things just like a human.
