Many people think heirlooms (传家宝) are expensive things. However, Sara doesn’t think so. She has a few heirlooms. Anyone can buy them in a shop. However, they are special to her because they belonged to her grandmother.
After Sara’s grandmother died, her family chose something of hers to keep to remember her. As Sara lived far away, her mother picked things out for her—a tablecloth, a mirror, and an old pot. Sara kept these things, but she didn’t use them much. The tablecloth didn’t fit her tables. She didn’t like the color of the mirror frame (镜框), and the pot was too small and old.
Sara’s life changed when she read something in a book: Don’t keep anything in your house that you don’t find useful or beautiful. That’s right. “But what about sentimental (情感的) things like heirlooms? They’re beautiful if they remind us of good times with loved ones,” Sara thought.
Sara decided to give these things a fresh start. She painted the mirror frame a different color to go with her daughter’s room. Although Sara’s daughter never met her grandmother, they share a connection through the mirror. Sara bought a table to go with her grandmother’s tablecloth. She also started using her grandmother’s pot. Whenever she cooks with it, Sara thinks of her grandmother making bread long ago. These things, once forgotten, are useful again, bringing together old memories and new stories.

Do you know a place with beautiful white beaches and clear blue water full of colorful fish? This is an island named Socotra (索科特拉岛). It sounds a little usual, doesn’t it? Well, there’s a lot more to Socotra than that. You can see things there that cannot be found anywhere else in the world.
Socotra is in the Indian Ocean, 250 kilometers east of Africa and 340 kilometers south of Yemen. The island “left” Africa six million (6,000,000) years ago, and over that time it has developed its own unique (独特的) plant life. If you travel away from the beautiful beaches and up into the rocky mountains in the middle of the island, you may feel like you are going back in time.
Perhaps you will see the desert rose, with its pretty pink flowers. The desert rose is a “bottle” tree. It keeps water in its fat trunk. Like many of Socotra’s plants, it has developed to keep alive in the island’s hot, dry weather.
One of the most unusual plants on Socotra is the “dragon’s blood” tree. It is just like an umbrella, with a lot of branches under a green top. The tree gets its name from the red sap (树液) that comes out when it is cut. This sap has been used for hundreds of years as a medicine (药物) and to make red dye and paint pictures.
Socotra isn’t an easy place for people to visit. To get there, you need to fly from Yemen. There are only a few hotels in its largest town, Hadiba, and the island doesn’t have many good roads. The people there live a very simple life. But more and more visitors are coming to Socotra to see its unique natural beauty. Someone even thinks it is the place that looks most like an alien planet (外星球) in the world. It is called a land that time forgot. What do you think of it?

19. Why is Socotra called “a land that time forgot”?
A. Because it’s easy to find hotels in its largest town. B. Because you have to go there from Yemen by ship.
C. Because it’s difficult for visitors to travel there. D. Because people there come from an alien planet.
20. Which of the following words can better describe Socotra?
