“How are you?” is a nice question. It’s a friendly way that people in the USA greet each other. But when a person says “How are you?” he hopes to hear the answer “Fine.” even if (即使) the person’s friend isn’t fine. The reason is that “How are you?” isn’t really a question, and “Fine.” isn’t really an answer. They are common (常见的) ways of saying “Hello” and “Hi”.
Sometimes people also don’t say exactly (确切地) what they mean. For example, when someone asks “Do you agree?” the other person may be thinking, “No, I don’t agree. I think you are wrong.” But it isn’t very polite, so they may say, “I’m not so sure.” It’s a nice way to say that you don’t agree with someone.
It’s interesting when people want to finish talking. For example, when a person wants to finish talking with the other person on the phone, he may say “I have to go now.” Sometimes he gives an excuse (借口), for example, “Someone is knocking at the door.” The excuse may be real, or it may not be. It’s a polite way to finish talking and it doesn’t hurt the other person’s feelings. People don’t always say exactly what they are thinking. And it’s a part of the game of language.
26.What can we learn from Paragraph 1?
A.It’s not a friendly way to say “Hello” or “Hi”.
B.“How are you?” is another way to say “Hello”.
C.“Fine” is the only answer to the question “How are you”.
D.Only people in the USA say “How are you?” to greet each other.
27.Why do people say “I’m not so sure.” when they don’t agree with someone?
A.Because they don’t understand the question.
B.Because they don’t want to answer the question.
C.Because they are not sure about how to answer it.
D.Because they don’t think it’s polite to say “I don’t agree with you.”
28.What’s the best title for the passage?
A.A Kind of Language Game B.A Style of Making Excuses
C.A Polite Way to Finish Talking D.Different Ways of Greeting Each Other

As students, you may have many dreams. They can be very big like becoming Superman, or they can be small. You may just want to become one of the ten best students in your class.
If you find a dream, what do you do with it? Do you ever try to make your dream come true?
Follow Your Heart by Australian writer Andrew Matthews tells us that making our dreams come true is life’s biggest challenge (挑战).
“You may think you’re not very good at some school subjects, or that it is impossible (不可能) for you to become a star. You won’t make your dream come true with these ideas,” the book says.
In fact, everyone can make his dream come true. The first important thing you must do is to remember what your dream is.
Don’t let it leave your heart (心). Keep telling yourself what you want. Do this step by step (一步步地) and your dream will come true faster. A big dream is, in fact, many small dreams.
Never give up (放弃) your dream. There will be difficulties on the road. But the biggest problem comes from yourself. You need to decide what is the most important. Studying instead of (代替) watching TV will bring you better exam points. Saving five yuan instead of buying an ice cream means you can buy a new book. Having to worry about our IQ is bad enough, and now there’s something called an “EQ”! Do we have to worry about that, too?
The answer is yes and no. Your EQ stands for “emotional quotient”. It’s a measure (测量) of how well you understand your own feelings and those of other people. People with high EQs know their emotions (情绪) and those of others. They control their own emotions well.
For serious life problems like school and work, people may not think of emotions. However, we are finding that, in fact, having a good understanding of emotions is important in any group. Employers are always looking for employees (雇员) with good people skills, right? Your EQ is just that: your people skills. People with high EQs become good leaders and helpful managers who understand how to deal with stressed (焦虑的) employees. They understand how to use people’s feelings to reach their goals—whether to create trust within a team or create passion for a project. Outside of work, understanding your partner’s emotions can certainly help you create a healthy relationship.
There are many ways to measure your EQ. Most ask you to perform different emotional problem-solving tasks. Testing your EQ is a useful way to find out how well you read emotions. If you think your EQ might be low, there are ways to improve (改进) it. First, get in touch with your emotions. Think about how they change your actions. When you feel your emotions leading you to a bad action, see if you can stop it. Then, focus on other people. See if you can understand their emotions and emotional reasons for their actions. In this way, you will build patience and a strong EQ.
37.What will NOT a high EQ help you with?
A.Knowing others’ emotions. B.Controlling others’ bad feelings.
C.Helping with others’ emotions. D.Creating a healthy relationship.
38.What can you learn from Paragraph 3?
A.People with high EQs help a lot in the work.
B.People don’t need to use emotions a lot in the work.
C.People with high EQs want to become leaders.
D.People with high EQs are smarter than others.
