Today is Jim’s thirteenth birthday. Many friends come to his birthday party. They sing songs, play games and share the birthday cake in the afternoon. In the evening, Jim watches TV with his parents in the living room. Two hours later, his mother says, “It’s time to go to bed. It’s 9:00 now.” “But why don’t you go to bed?” Jim asks. “We are adults (成年人). Adults go to bed late,” says his mother.
Jim doesn’t want to go to bed. He asks his mother to give him a cake. It is too late, so his mother doesn’t want him to eat it. She says, “The cakes all go to bed.” “But not all of them, Mum,” Jim says. “The small cakes go to bed, but their parents don’t go to sleep. They are awake. They are adults and they can go to bed late. Am I right?”
Jim’s mother can’t say a word. Finally, she gives Jim a piece of cake. She learns a lot from this: if we want others to do something, we should do it first.

Family rules help children learn what is and isn’t OK in the family. Following them can help children learn to follow rules in other places, so it’s not good to make rules too late. Good family rules are easy for children to understand.
One day, on the way home from school, my mum told me she planned to make some rules for me, my brothers and sisters. We really didn’t have any rules before, so mum took care of that. On Sunday she started giving us some rules:
* Clean your rooms every two days.
* Be ready for dinner at 7:00 p.m. That means sitting at the table with clean hands.
* If mum is having a meeting in the house, be very quiet. That means turning down (调低) the music and the TV.
* Be ready for bed at 9:30 p.m. and get up at 7:30 a.m. to get ready for school.
* Take out the litter on Monday morning before school.
* Clean the bathroom on Friday.
Following these rules isn’t too hard, and sometimes it’s even fun. But at other times, it can be tough. For example, if your room is really dirty and you can’t finish (完成) cleaning it on that day, you have to finish it on the next day, and you still have to do something else. That isn’t easy.
Mum made these rules because ▲ . She wants us to learn how to be on time, be clean and tidy and be polite. Every day, we try to follow her rules. These rules help make our family warm and happy. I feel lucky to have such a family.

Many Chinese families live busy lives. After school, the children have sports, music lessons, club meetings, and many other activities, including hours of homework. The parents are busy working, taking care of children, cooking meals, and driving their children to activities. Some families just have time to eat meals together about twice a week.
One community (社区) decided that it was time to make a change. After seven months of planning, the community took one night off. They called it “Family Night”, a night for families to spend time together. Sports teams stopped practices, and teachers did not give homework.
On Family Night, families agreed to turn off their televisions. They decided not to answer the telephones, either. Answering machines said, “Please call back tomorrow.” Many families ordered take-out pizza and other take-out food so that they wouldn’t spend time cooking.
Families also did some activities including board games and card games. These games gave families a chance to spend time together. Children and parents weren’t so busy and children didn’t spend so much time playing video games or watching television. On Family Night, families relaxed and spent the evening together. The community hoped to have many more “Family Nights”.
