The boy didn’t answer and went for his seat.

In fact, there is a sad story behind it. Liu’s father was once an officer in the army and he died on duty in 2015. Liu was only four years old at that time. The card was for the relatives of army officers who died on duty. With it, one can ride the bus for free.

His mother posted the video on the Internet and wanted more people to know about the card. “Every time we use the card, it tells us Liu’s father is a hero. We are proud of him,” she said.

When you go to Australia, you can always hear something like this, “I am dead set against the plan!” What does the speaker mean by saying it? It’s an Australian slang (俚语), which means the speaker doesn’t agree with the plan strongly.

Australia is famous for its interesting and unusual slang. Even native English-speakers visiting Australia can have trouble understanding the locals because of their accents (口音) and the  expressions they use. But some Australian slang expressions are used all over the world.

Selfie

The popularity of social media and smartphones has made selfie a very common English word. In 2013, Oxford Dictionaries made it the “Word of the Year”, and the US has a National Selfie Day.

But selfie was a part of Australian English long before it became popular in other countries. The earliest known use was in 2002 when an Australian college student posted a photo that he had taken of himself online, calling it a selfie.

The student, Nathan Hope, told ABC News that he didn’t make the word, but rather “it was just  common slang in Australia at the time.”

Stoked

To be stoked is to be really happy or pleased. For example, you might say “I’m stoked!” if you’re excited about your holiday plans.

Along with other expressions, such as ripper, which means“very good” or“great”, stoked was first used by Australians in the 1960s and 1970s.

No worries

“No worries” is a common reply to “thank you”. For example, James, “Thanks for helping me.” Jessica, “No worries.”

So the next time someone thanks you, instead of “you’re welcome”, you can say “no worries” and they’ll know that you’re speaking Australian English.

29.How does the writer start the passage?

A.By listing numbers.                           B.By showing pictures.

C.By comparing (对比) facts.                D.By asking questions.

30.What does the underlined word “stoked” mean in Paragraph 6?

A.Excited.        B.Surprised.            C.Interested.            D.Worried.

31.Your football team won last Friday. What would your Australian friend say to you?

A.No selfies.                                        B.You little ripper.

C.No worries.                                      D.Dead set against the team.

“Thank you for your email. I’ll leave the school to follow my dream of knitting (编织) sweaters for penguins in Antarctica (南极洲) and don’t work for the school. I will be back to school after my penguin friends are happy.” Weeks ago, a teacher in the UK sent this email to her Chinese student, and it soon became popular online.

You may find this email surprising, but knitting sweaters for penguins is a real act of kindness. The Penguin Foundation (基金会) and Phillip Island Nature Parks in Australia came up with the idea.

The activity began because of a serious oil spill (石油泄漏) near Phillip Island in the 1990s. During that time, the number and health of baby penguins had a serious drop. When little penguins were covered in oil, their lives were put in danger.

To solve this problem, the foundation asked people from all over the world to knit sweaters for penguins. These sweaters could keep them warm during the cleaning and stop them from eating the oil.

Luckily, the idea worked. In 2001, there was another oil spill near Phillip Island. This time, the sweaters helped save 96% of the penguins in the area.

However, some bird protection groups queried, “Might these sweaters put more weight on penguins?” To answer this, the foundation said that the sweaters are only used for a short time. If the penguins are better, they no longer wear them.

32.Why did the teacher leave the school?

A.To study penguins.                            B.To help penguins.

C.To have a good rest.                          D.To sell sweaters in Antarctica.

33.What can sweaters do for the penguins?

A.Help baby penguins grow faster.         B.Protect them from falling into the water.

C.Stop them from eating the spilled oil.  D.Clean baby penguins covered in oil.

34.What does the underlined word “queried” mean?

A.Showed.        B.Questioned.          C.Introduced.          D.Advised.

35.What is the passage mainly about?

A.A new way to feed penguins.              B.The problem of oil spills in Antarctica.

C.A teacher’s journey to Antarctica.       D.Knitting sweaters to help penguins.

One day in autumn Squire Gordon went on a long journey. John went with him and I pulled the cart (二轮车). The weather was rainy and windy. but we travelled happily until we came to the old wooden bridge.

The man at the tollgate (收费处) told us the river was rising fast. “There’s going to be a bad storm tonight,” he said.

We arrived in the town, but Squire Gordon’s business took a long time. We didn’t leave until late afternoon. The wind was blowing, making a terrible sound.

Suddenly we heard a crack (爆裂声),and a huge tree fell across the road in front of us. I stopped still. I was shaking with fear, but I did not turn round or run away.

“We must go back to the crossing,” said John, “and drive six miles to the wooden bridge.”

When we got there it was nearly dark. There was water on the middle of the bridge, but the Squire did not stop. As soon as my feet touched the bridge, I knew that something was wrong. I stopped dead. “Go on, Beauty,” said the Squire.

“There’s something wrong, sir,” said John. He got out and tried to lead (牵) me forward. “Come on, Beauty,” he said. But I knew that the bridge was not safe.

Just then the man saw us. “Hey there! Stop!” he cried.

“What is it?” shouted the Squire.

“The bridge is broken in the middle,” he answered. “If you go on to it, you are all going to drown (淹死) in the river.”

“Thank God!” said the Squire. “Thank you, Beauty!” said John. We turned around and went along the road by the river. For a long time no one said anything. Then John said: “Black Beauty saved our lives. He knew the bridge was dangerous.”

When we returned home, the Squire told Mrs Gordon: “We are all safe, thanks to Black Beauty!”

That night I had good food to eat and a comfortable bed of straw (稻草). And I was glad because I was very tired.
